How to compose music
Music scales
The first thing you should do in order to be able to compose music properly
is to gain some basic knowledge of music theory. So music (on all instruments) consists
of 12 notes:
C , (C#/Db), D , (D#/Eb), E , F , (F#/Gb) , G , (G#/Ab), A , (A#/Bb), B
The notes in the brackets have 2 names but they still are the same note ( they sound the same )
so for example C# (C sharp) sounds the same as Db (D flat).
Once you remember all the notes and their order you should learn what are the music scales, how do they work
and how to build them. Tonal music composition works mainly around scales so it is
very important that you learn how they work and how to use them.
Music scale is a number of notes choosen from those 12 above and put together in order.
So for example you could take 5 notes:
C , D , F# , G , A# and it would give you a scale
which you could use to play and compose music.
Western music composition works mainly around 2 scales:
Major and Minor
Major scale sounds happy so you could use it to compose some nice sounding, cheerful music
Minor scale sounds sad so it could be used to compose music which sounds sorrowful and unhappy
Both Major and Minor scale consist of 7 notes choosen from those 12 above.
